With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Marian Robinson, mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama. Marian passed away peacefully on Friday night at the age of 86.
Marian, born Marian Lois Robinson on July 30, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, was more than just the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama. She was the daughter of the fourth of seven children—five girls, followed by two boys—born to Purnell Nathaniel Shields, a house painter and carpenter, and his wife Rebecca Jumper, a licensed practical nurse. Her parents later separated. Both parents had multi-racial ancestry. Her mother’s grandfather, Dolphus T. Shields (c. 1860–1950), was a descendant of slavery, with his mother an enslaved person and his white father the heir of the enslaver.
Marian’s love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. As a mother, she was a source of unwavering support and love for her daughter, Michelle. Her role as a grandmother to Michelle’s two daughters, Malia and Sasha, was a testament to her boundless love and affection. Marian’s warm smile and kind heart will always be remembered, reflecting her love for her family.
Marian’s life was not just about her family but also about her community. She was a dedicated community activist and volunteer, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her passion for education and unwavering advocacy for social justice and equality made her a beacon of hope in her community. Marian’s dedication to her role as a community leader was truly inspiring.
In her later years, Marian found joy in giving back to her community. She regularly volunteered at local charities, dedicating her time and energy to those in need. Marian’s love, kindness, and compassion were not just for her family but for everyone she met. Her charitable work was a testament to her selflessness, and her legacy of love and service will be cherished by all who know her.
Marian’s passing is a great loss to her family and friends, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be dearly missed, but her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and strength.
A private funeral service will be held for family and close friends. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to Marian’s favourite charity, the Chicago Community Trust.
Marian Robinson will be remembered for her grace, love, and dedication to her family and community. May she rest in peace.
