Fidel Castro Dead at 90 - The Cuban Dictator

Fidel Castro Dead at 90 | The Cuban Dictator

Fidel Castro, the enigmatic and controversial former leader of Cuba, passed away at the age of 90 on November 25, 2016. As one of the most polarizing figures of the 20th century, Castro’s death marks the end of an era for a man who reshaped the political landscape of Cuba and the world as a whole.

Castro’s rise to power came in 1959 when he led a successful revolution that ousted Batista and established a socialist government in Cuba. As the leader of the new regime, Fidel Castro implemented a series of reforms aimed at improving the lives of the Cuban people, including universal healthcare and education and land reforms that redistributed wealth from the wealthy elite to the working class.

However, Castro’s rule was also marked by controversy and criticism. His government was accused of human rights abuses, including censorship, political repression, and the suppression of dissent. Castro’s close ties to the Soviet Union during the Cold War further fueled tensions with the United States and led to decades of economic sanctions and political hostility.

Despite these challenges, Castro remained a symbol of resistance and defiance against imperialism and capitalism. His charismatic personality and revolutionary fervour inspired a generation of left-wing activists and revolutionaries worldwide.

Upon his death, reactions to Castro’s legacy were deeply divided. Supporters lauded him as a champion of social justice and anti-imperialism, while critics condemned him as a tyrant who trampled on human rights and suppressed political freedoms. In Cuba, thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects to Castro, while in Miami, home to a large Cuban exile community, celebrations erupted at the news of his passing.

However, regardless of one’s opinions on Castro, it is indisputable that he left a lasting impact on Cuban society and politics. For better or worse, his legacy will be remembered as complex and multifaceted and defying easy categorization. As history unfolds, Fidel Castro’s influence will continue to be felt for generations.

The Cuban dictator helped bring the world to the brink of nuclear war, tormented 11 American presidents and exerted almost total control over the last remaining communist government in the Western Hemisphere before his death.

President Raúl Castro delivered a statement on Cuban television to confirm his brother’s death:

“With profound pain, I appear to inform our people and the friends of the Americas and the world that today, November 25, at 10:29 pm, the Commander in Chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, died. In compliance with the expressed will of the Companion Fidel, his remains will be cremated. In the early hours of Saturday the 26th, the funeral organizing committee will provide our people with detailed information on the organization of the posthumous tribute that will be done for the founder of the Cuban Revolution. Ever onward to victory.”

The Cuban government will observe nine days of mourning for Fidel Castro. After two days of observances in Revolution Plaza in Havana, Castro’s ashes will be transported across the country to the eastern city of Santiago. The final Mass and ceremony will take place on December 4, and his ashes will be interred in the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia.
