ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has described the death of prominent national Dr Bernard Yankey as a blow for Dominica.
Yankey, a former Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) High Commissioner to Canada died Tuesday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a car crash on Saturday evening.
“I’d say the country has lost a great citizen who selflessly gave so much of his intellect and knowledge towards the development of Dominica and the Caribbean,” Skerrit said.
The Dominica Association of Catholic Men (DACOM) also said it was saddened by the death of its member “who had given much” to the group.
Yankey, who would have celebrated his 75th birthday later this month, also served as and as director of the Economic Affairs unit at the OECS Secretariat in St Lucia and was a former director of policy at the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank.
Locally, he had stints as the chairman of the Agricultural Industrial Development Bank and the Dominica Banana Marketing Corporation. He also served as president of the Dominica State College and was a board member of the Dominica Social Security.
He received the Sisserou Award of Honour in 1983 during Dominica’s independence celebrations.
