Waple Nedd, the former Grenadian Parliamentarian, passed away quietly at a Miami Hospital on the weekend.
Waple Nedd, 71, a former Parliamentarian from 1972-76 under the late Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy, died with her family at her bedside at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, on Saturday.
She established women’s organizations, parenting groups, and sports clubs in Grenada during her tenure.
On Tuesday, Social Development Minister Yolande Bain-Horsford paid tribute to Nedd, saying that the nation has lost one of its most outstanding daughters.
“Mrs. Nedd was one of the early crusaders for women’s rights, their involvement in politics and gender equality, and her efforts are now paying dividends, as women are taking their rightful place in society,” Bain-Horsford said.
In 2007, the Ministry of Social Development honoured Nedd as one of the most outstanding women in the nation for her contribution during its International Women’s Day celebrations.
As a social worker for Save-the-Children Fund, she pioneered nutritional and early childhood education programs in the Caribbean for the most vulnerable in society: children.
Her husband, Kenneth Nedd Sr, and her three sons, Kenneth Nedd Jr., Dr. Kester J. Nedd, and Dr. Khan Nedd, survived her.
Nedd will be buried in her native Grenada on January 20, following a funeral service at a Recreational ground in her home parish. – Michael Bascombe
